Coffee gets people going every morning and is used by millions every day in the United States and around the world. There is coffee from all parts of the world offering different flavors and robustness. Regardless of where the coffee originates, the formula for a great cup of coffee is the same. The perfect cup of coffee is a delicate balance between the amount and type of grind of coffee beans you use, the temperature of the water, the length of time the water is in contact with the ground coffee and proper handling and storage of coffee beans.
Buying, Storing and Grinding Coffee
If you want to guarantee the perfect cup of coffee every time we have to go back to how we store our coffee beans. Buying coffee whole, in bean form is the best way to lock in the flavor and freshness. Once a bean is ground, it's flavor and freshness are immediately compromised. This is why proper storage is crucial to a great tasting cup of coffee. The best way to buy beans are in air tight sealed bags. Stay away from bulk coffee beans because these beans are not stored air tight, thus compromising their freshness. If you buy beans from a roaster and they aren't in an air tight bag, make sure you store them wrapped tightly in an air tight container as soon as possible. This will keep your beans fresh much longer.
Many people place their coffee beans in the freezer and then grind what they need and store. This is a bad practice. Freezing coffee beans allows for condensation to form on the bean itself, thus accelerating the loss of freshness. Only grind coffee at the time you plan to use it and never put it in the freezer.
There are several different grinds for different coffee applications. Espresso is a very fine grind, suited for a quick brew time while French press requires a very coarse grind suited for an extended brew time. The proper grind for drip coffee lies somewhere in between. About 10 to 15 seconds in coffee grinder will be appropriate.
Water Temperature and Ratio to Coffee
Measuring your coffee correctly is extremely crucial to getting that perfect cup. You should use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water. An average coffee cup filled just beneath the lip is about 9 ounces of water. For a normal mug of coffee 3 tablespoons of ground coffee is good. Water temperature should be around 190°F-205°F which is just below the boiling point. The best way to brew in my opinion is not in a coffee maker but in a handy Melita plastic coffee brewer, equipped with either a metal mesh filter for best results or a paper filter. To keep coffee warm after brewing I recommend a thermos carafe which will not burn the coffee like the hot plate attached to your coffeemaker will.
Coffee has a point in which it will release bitter flavors. This is the reason it is crucial to use the right amount of water to grounds. If you brew coffee through grounds that have already passed the optimal point for brewing, the flavors released from the coffee grounds are bitter. This is a common complaint of people who say they don't like strong coffee. Properly brewed coffee is supposed to be strong and robust, but not bitter or acrid.
In summary, brewing a great cup of coffee is simple. While at the same time, making a cup of horrid coffee is just as simple. With these simple tips in mind, a great cup of coffee that will beat out Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Peets is possible right in your own home.

The process of brewing coffee is considered by many to be an art form. As such, the equipment that is used at every stage of the process is imperative in determining the final result. Coffee can be made using any one of many methods; coffee can be boiled, steeped, or pressured.
Percolators or automatic coffee-makers utilise the effect of gravity in order to brew coffee. In these machines, hot water is allowed to drip onto coffee grounds that are held in a coffee filter. This filter is either made of paper or perforated metal and allows the water to pass through the ground coffee, thereby creating a liquid infused with the aromas and taste of the ground coffee beans.
Coffee may also be brewed using other methods. One such example is to brew coffee by using a device known as a French press. In this method, ground coffee and hot water are combined in a coffee press and left to brew for a set period of time. A plunger is then used to remove the coffee from the container, leaving the ground coffee at the bottom of the device.
An espresso machine forces hot, pressurised water through ground coffee. This method of brewing under high pressure means that the final product has as much as 10 to 15 times the amount of coffee to water ratio as coffee brewed using other methods.

Most of us spend a fair portion of our time in office drinking coffee. Cameroon Taylor is one of those few lucky ones who gets to drink coffee for work. He has been a coffee enthusiast for as long as he can remember and after having a sip of most of the major types of coffee from around the world, he started to write about the first love of his life; coffee. The love affair continues?
Question about french press coffee makers: the coffee left in the french press is still brewing?
let's say you make a few four cups of coffee in a french press. I dispense a few cups, and have some left in the french press. If the coffee just sits there, it will continue to "steep" and get stronger..So your second cup of joe will be super duper strong.
Should you dispense all of it so it all has a consistent taste? Thanks for answering.

For anyone who enjoys coffee and espresso drinks, having to go to your local café every time you want to enjoy a quality drink can be cumbersome and expensive. Equally as cumbersome is the process of making espresso drinks at home. The time it takes you to measure out the espresso, press them into your machine, make your drink and then clean up can be quite cumbersome.
Fortunately for café fiends, there is a middle road between your nearest barista and brewing your own espresso. Espresso coffee pods are a quick way for you to brew quality espresso/coffee drinks without a lot of work or clean up. And they certainly won't break your bank like purchasing a latte every morning on your way to work.
What Is An Espresso Coffee Pod?
Espresso coffee pods are like pre-packaged coffee filters. The espresso or coffee is sandwiched between the filter paper, forming a pod about two inches in diameter. You use them in the same way that you would brew coffee in a traditional home coffee pot, only without the hassle of having to measure out grounds. You just pop the espresso or coffee pod into a compatible machine, and your work is done. Clean up is just as easy, since the only thing you have to do is throw away the espresso/coffee pod and rinse out your machine.
Equipment
If you already own an espresso machine, you're in luck. Espresso coffee pods are designed to work with your existing equipment, so there's no need to have to purchase anything new. Basically espresso coffee pods are just making the process a lot faster and easier for you. If you don't currently own an espresso machine, and were deterred from making an investment in one because of the work involved, you can now consider owning your own machine and using espresso coffee pods.
With the growing popularity of espresso coffee pods, you should be able to find most of your favorite espressos and coffees available in pod form. Everyone from Nestle to Starbucks has started packaging coffee in this way. Espresso coffee pods save you time, without skimping on quality. You can still brew quality espresso or coffee, and you can enjoy that fact that is has already been packaged for you to brew right away. What are you waiting for? Start enjoying great espresso without all the hard work!
