Espresso coffee makers came into existence from man’s need for a faster cup of coffee. The espresso machines not only produced the coffee faster but also produced a better one. Initially in some machines they found some kinks to be worked out but the coffee maker inventors didn’t let little issues deter them.

Who invented the first espresso coffee machine?

Each record gives us different answers. Some record says, the first espresso coffee maker was invented by Louis Bernard Babaut in 1822 along with Edward Santais, who was the marketer of machine in 1843. It got the publicity in 1855 at the Universal Exposition in Paris.

According to the records, in an hour a coffee maker can produce one thousand cups of espresso coffee using steam to force water through coffee held in the filter. Every new invention has to bear risk and this espresso coffee maker was not an exception. It had a tendency to blow from time to time and sometimes it burned the coffee too.

The initial espresso coffee makers weren’t so easy to use. Operating them required some degree of skill and it left plenty of room for diversity. The intensity of the heat & the length of time were controlled by the operator and the water valve remained open. The coffee users could put in less coffee grounds & obtain strong coffee or use more water & get a diluted one.

Further records credit Luigi Bezzera, a manufacturer, with the invention of Espresso in 1903. Bezzera wanted to make coffee faster, so he added more pressure due to which ‘Voila’ the Fast Coffee Machine was born. This machine made coffee faster and better than any other machine. The machine invented by Bezzera used the force of steam to push water through a fixed filter containing coffee.

Even though Bezzera was skilled in inventing, he was lacking in the marketing talent to promote his creation. In 1905, Desidero Pavoni purchased the rights of the espresso machine and the product was successfully marketed, changing the way everyone drank coffee. The coffee makers were sold throughout Europe by Pavoni.

Franceso Illy created the first automatic espresso coffee maker. In 1935, Illeta invented the coffee maker and used compressed air instead of steam for his machine. The problem of exploding espresso coffee makers was solved by this machine & gave a more stable result.

The espresso coffee maker invented by Achille's Gaggia bears his name in 1945. The lever action was included in his invention and even today we can get the modern versions of both Illeta and Gaggia espresso coffee makers. An electric rotating pump was created by Ernest Valente in 1950. The pump allowed a continuous, even flow of water through the coffee maker.

In 1970’s, Illy went on to simplify the espresso coffee maker process, when he introduced a machine that combined the best parts of previous espresso coffee maker methods. His machine used double filters, which costs less than other coffee makers and was simple to use.

Super automatic espresso coffee makers were born in the 70's. Now they are the standard coffee makers in many countries. The machines continue to evolve. The debate over which methods and which machines produce the best espresso will be going on as long as people continue to enjoy their cup of Joe.

Do French press coffee makers require different coffee grounds?

I'm thinking of getting my dad a french press, but am afraid he'll have to get all new coffee grounds since I read they require coarser grinds. Is that true? He has so many other coffee already ground up for his drip coffee maker. Thanks.

No avid espresso drinker's life feels complete without an espresso coffee maker that will deliver espresso the way the espresso drinker likes it each morning. Surprisingly, many people still go plop down $2 to $4 at the local coffee shop instead of buying their own espresso coffee makers . If you are one of these people that for whatever reason still has not purchased an espresso machine, stay tuned.

Of course, you don't want to just throw money at the first espresso coffee machine that comes along. You need to decide how lazy you want to be with your espresso machine. Odds are that the reason you don't own one has some correlation to not wanting to spend a whole lot of time making your espresso. But just in case you are interested in all of the details of making espresso, we'll discuss manual espresso coffee makers too.

Manual espresso coffee makers basically require you to already have your coffee beans ground and to manually put the grounds and the water in the machine. Also, if you like frothing, most of these have a pump you can use to add frothing.

For a little more convenience, you can get a mostly automatic espresso maker. To use these machines, you have a pump you start and then wait about thirty seconds for extraction. These are about the most popular home espresso coffee machines because they are inexpensive and relatively small. For a little more money, you can get a slightly larger mostly automatic espresso machine that has self on-off control built in as well.

Of course, if you are a true espresso aficionado and you spend a lot of money on espresso already, you might as well have an automatic one that will make you that perfect espresso each time at whatever time you have espressos scheduled. How automatic is automatic? The thing taps right into your plumbing. You just have to occasionally check your coffee bean reservoir and disposal bin.

Delonghi is a name that is known for quality and innovation. Delonghi was founded in 1955 to make heating elements and long been known for its kitchen appliances. Delonghi espresso makers are one of their newest kitchen appliances, following on the heels of coffee makers, percolators and automatic drip coffee makers.

Delonghi is most famously known in the world of espresso makers for its Super Automatic Delonghi Magnifica espresso maker. The Delonghi Magnifica is a line of espresso machines that have the features most homeowners want in a coffee machine.

Delonghi espresso makers include conical burr grinders, 15 bar pumps, Thermo Block boilers and direct to brew systems that make them among the best of the best.

These top of the line features combine with its good looks, included frothing wand and a system that reheats instantly to allow for almost no downtime between espresso brews. With all of these features it is surprisingly affordable.

The Delonghi espresso maker is truly one of the best of the best in home espresso makers. The Magnifico is only one of their top line models. Other models include digital systems that allow users to program every aspect of the brew, including water temperature and brew size and time. These automatic makers allow for complete customization of the espresso.

Delonghi also has a patented Single Touch Cappuccino and Latte System which allow the espresso experience to be truly automated, right down to the frothed and steamed milk.

No automatic espresso experience would be complete without automatic cleanup. Automatic cleanup systems are an integral part of the Delonghi espresso lineups.

In addition to being the best of the best in terms of design, Delonghi espresso makers are also among the easiest to use. As with all automatic espresso makers, reading the instructions is paramount to being able to use the machine.

Automatic espresso makers, particularly digital ones with programmable keys, are typically only slightly difficult on the initial setup. After that, it is simply choosing the button that has the settings desired and waiting for the machine to produce results.

Steeped in History

Europeans have been relying on Delonghi’s commitment to quality for decades. Homes in the United States have only been treated to their espresso lines since the start of the 21st century.

Since coming to the U.S., Delonghi has fast become a leader in the espresso machine market for both home and commercial use. In addition to designing makers for espresso, they have top quality drip coffee makers, percolators, coffee urns and grinders for both commercial and home use.

The Delonghi espresso maker is the perfect choice for individuals wanting both high quality espresso and a stylish appliance for their kitchen. With its reputation for quality, online reviews and several designs to choose from, it’s easy to see why Delonghi is considered the best of the best by many.

Believe it or not, there are eight different types of espresso makers. The first, and most common one to find in homes in Spain, Portugal and Italy, is the stovetop espresso maker. There are three chambers, the top holding the ground coffee, the middle being a filter basket and the bottom holds the water. As the water is heated, it forces steam up through a tube to the second chamber, then the top, making espresso that is ready to serve.

A steam espresso maker is very similar to a stovetop one, and produces a cup of espresso that is nearly identical. A piston-driven espresso maker is another beast entirely. This type of espresso maker comes in high end designs that can cost several hundreds of dollars. Ornate and exquisite, they can be made out of brass, copper, chrome or silver.

Also, the piston-driven espresso maker is what made the crema a desirable trait in a cup of the drink. Before, the crema was thought of as an unwanted waste product.

The piston-driven espresso machine gave birth to its pump-driven counterpart. Small, simple and ideal for home use, it is also the most popular machine found in American coffee shops. A motor-driven pump does the work that manual force used to, making this version very easy to operate.

There are also semi automatic and automatic espresso machines, the former is automatic in the way that the water is delivered from a pump instead of manual force. The latter allows the user to send a programmed amount of water through the flow meter.

Super automatic espresso machines are even easier to operate, since they literally do all of the work for you. From grinding to tamping and extracting, getting a perfect cup of espresso has never been easier. Fully self contained, all you have to do is fill the water reservoir and bean hopper. The antithesis of the Presso manually operated coffee press, these are more expensive but completely fool proof.

Office Coffee Makers: Taste and Variety is the Key

When it comes to office coffee makers, the most important issues for the users are flexibility, taste and ease of use. Since everyone has different preferences, it is important to have a coffee machine that can make a range of drinks: black coffee, latte, cappuccino, flavored coffee drinks etc. There should also be an option to make tea to cater for workers who do not drink coffee.

Most popular office coffee makers are single serve coffee stations that make hot, fresh coffee straight into a coffee mug. Individual coffee and beverage packets provide a variety of beverage flavors that can meet the needs of any coffee or tea drinker. What makes these units so popular is the ease of use, convenience, and the distinct advantage of no messy cleanup. Plus, you can get a hot steamy cup of joe anytime on demand! No bitter coffee that has been sitting in the pot for hours and doesn't even taste like coffee anymore.

User reviews of these models indicate that users love the variety and the ease of use. The disadvantage of these units however is cost. The refills tend to be a lot more expensive than cartridge refills for 10 or 12 cup units. Varieties must also be purchased in bulk so offering a very large variety can get expensive.

Another option is an office coffee service offered by some of the major chains like Peet's, Dunkin' Donuts, or Starbucks. With this type of service you will get freshly brewed coffee delivered to your office several times a day along with all the extras like creamers, sweeteners and napkins. Some vendors will also give you a lease on a complete high quality coffee brewing system. The coffee service is a very good solution for large offices. In general, it is probably not worth it if your office has less than 20 employees.

On the more conservative side there are many thermal coffee makers available. Because the carafes are insulated and keep their temperature naturally instead of with a heating pad, the quality of coffee is far superior to the proverbial "glass coffee pot on a plate" variety.

No matter whether you decide to opt for a company purchased coffee machine or for an coffee service, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for an office coffee maker:
- Consider how many coffee drinkers will use the machine or service weekly. Are they willing to pitch in for more quality options, or does quality not matter too much?
- Be sure that the coffee machine will be able to keep the coffee at a consistently hot temperature for long hours. No one has time to make new coffee every 20 minutes, so something that will last throughout the morning and afternoon hours will be important.
- Find out what the coffee preferences are in your office. Maybe there are more who would pitch in if the machine provided cappuccino or latte options in addition to regularly brewed coffee.
- Convenience is a must in a busy work environment. A coffee machine that will require tedious cleaning and upkeep maybe become the behemoth on the counter that never gets used.
- How durable is the machine? If it's constantly breaking down or requires continual maintenance to keep it working, it may be more trouble than it's worth.

Get the best coffee maker or coffee service that you can afford. Providing good quality coffee in your office is a relatively cheap benefit that will be really appreciated by your employees.
