A French press consists of a narrow cylindrical jug usually made of glass or clear plastic, equipped with a lid and a plunger, made of metal or plastic, which fits tightly in the cylinder and which has a fine wire or nylon mesh acting as a filter. Coffee is brewed by placing the coffee and water together, leaving to brew for a few minutes, then depressing the plunger to trap the coffee grinds at the bottom of the jug. A French press requires coffee of a more coarse grind than that used for a drip brew coffee filter, such as produced by a burr mill grinder rather than the whirling blade variety, as a finer grind will seep through the press filter and into the coffee. Because the coffee grounds remain in direct contact with the brewing water and the grinds are filtered from the water via a mesh instead of a paper filter, coffee brewed with the French press captures more of the coffee's flavour and essential oils, which would become trapped in a traditional drip brew machine's paper filters. French pressed coffee is usually stronger and thicker and has more sediment than drip-brewed coffee.

When it comes to making a really great tasting cup of coffee for yourself or for friends then it is worth considering investing some money in a good quality French Press Coffee Pot. Not only can you make a great tasting coffee quickly but unlike espresso or cappuccino machines making a brew can be done very easily.
However it is important that when making a brew using your coffee pot you ensure that you do things correctly. If you don't then the chances of each cup of coffee tasting as good as the first is reduced. Below we offer a few tips that you may find useful to make great tasting coffee time and time again with a French Press Coffee Pot.
Tip 1 - Only every use coarsely ground coffee. The problem with finely ground coffee is that it can cause the filter in your pot to become clogged along with some of them passing through it into the brewed liquid. So you end up drinking some sediment which will cause the drink to have a bitter after taste. Although you can purchase coarsely ground coffee it is much better if you grind your own as this will ensure that the taste of the coffee is much fresher.
Tip 2 - For each 4 ounces of coffee (one mug) that you intend to brew in your coffee pot add one large tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee to it. As you measure each spoonful of coffee grounds out make sure that you pour them directly into the base of the French Press coffee pot. This will help to ensure that the plunger and filter will press down and keep them from getting into the liquid above as you press it down.
Tip 3 - Finally following the adding of the water stir them together then allow to stand for around 4 minutes. This will give the liquid plenty of time to extract the essential oils from the beans giving the brewer a much richer and fuller flavour.

Does regular ground coffee work in coffee press? Is coarse ground coffee absolutely necessary for coffee press?
They say "use medium to coarse ground coffee" for coffee press but I was wondering if the regular ground coffee such as folgers would work as good for coffee press. If someone knows the answer and wouldn't mind sharing, I'd really appreciate it!

I need to replace a glass carafe for a french press coffee maker. I want it to fit Bodum of Starbucks?
Someone gave me a starbucks french press & I love it. But I dropped it & the glass carafe broke. So I bought the bodum & the carafe would fit into Starbucks so when my friend came over, shoe wouln't have to know i broke her gift. But my boyfriend broke the new carafe!
I was hoping to by TWO new carafes, not only for back up in case one of us gets clumsy again, but also so I can make more coffee more quickly when we have a lot of company over.
Any suggestions on where to look? Especially for a bargain!

Are certain French Press coffee pots better than others?
I want to buy a French Press coffee pot but I'm not sure if certain brands have features that others don't. Looks fairly straightforward and most appear to be the same but if anyone has an opinion, I'd love to hear it before I buy one.
